Debt collection
What files do you handle?
We collect unpaid accounts for businesses and landlords everywhere in Quebec: invoices, rent, contract balances. We accept files with a balance over $100. See
Debt Collection.
How do I send you a file?
For one debtor, fill in the
online form. For several debtors, download our
Excel template, fill it in and send it to info@contencia.ca. Attach your supporting documents: invoices, contract or lease, statement of account, exchanges with the debtor.
How much does collection cost?
Our collection fees are set out in the collection mandate you sign before we start. Additional services have a fixed price, listed in Schedule B of the mandate and on this page. Prices may change: you are notified by email at least 30 days in advance. An annual subscription of $250 (plus taxes) applies from the first anniversary of the opening of your first file, only if a file is open. For consumers, the prices in effect at signing apply for the whole mandate.
How does the debtor pay you?
By Interac e-Transfer to info@contencia.ca. Above the bank’s limit, we provide another payment method. We never change our payment details without confirming by phone: be wary of any email asking you to pay elsewhere.
The debtor moved or their number no longer works. What can I do?
Order a
skip-tracing investigation (address and phone): $200 plus taxes. Search in the United States: $500 more; in another country: $500 more, plus the actual cost of documents and of the foreign investigator, estimated before any step. Searches in a public registry (Registraire des entreprises, etc.) cost $100 plus $50 per result, plus taxes.
Courts
Can you represent me before a court (Small Claims, TAL)?
No. The Code of Civil Procedure (art. 542) does not allow a collection agent to act as a representative in the Small Claims Division, and only a lawyer can represent you before the courts. We do not prepare or draft any document intended for a court. On request, we give you the information and documents already in your file; for next steps, consult a lawyer.
Investigations
Can you screen a rental applicant?
Yes. The
tenant screening checks the solvency and credibility of a residential rental applicant before the lease is signed. For commercial premises, see
commercial tenant screening: the applicant fills in the online form themselves.
Contencia
Where are you located?

How do you protect my information?
We process your information and your debtors’ information under our
privacy policy (in French), solely to carry out your mandate.
